Biography

I have been a professor at Emory since September 2001.  My recent work includes A Grammar of Murder:  Violent Scenes and Film Form (University of Chicago Press, October 2009) and articles on André Bazin, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Jean-Luc Godard, Sergei Parajanov, and Jean Renoir.  I am currently writing a book called The Surface of Things: Cinema and the Fate of Interiority.  My research and teaching focus on classical and contemporary film theory, criticism, and aesthetics.
