Biography

For the past twenty years, I have balanced an ambitious career as a photographer, a writer, an independent curator, and an educator.  These pursuits are complementary and interconnected.  Most of my work lies within the documentary tradition broadly understood, and many of my recent projects grapple with the challenges of historical memory through images.  My photoworks draw on a wide range of photographic genres and technologies, and are often accompanied by writings that likewise incorporate a variety of textual forms, from critical to historical and philosophical.  My photoworks, curatorial projects, and writings on photography, visual culture and contemporary art are represented on my website, www.jasonfrancisco.net.

The most encompassing project on which I am currently at work, Alive and Destroyed (2010-2015), wrestles with the long afterlife of genocide, specifically the destruction of the European Jews during the Second World War.  The project looks into the contemporary geography of the Holocaust in its epicenter in southern Poland and western Ukraine––what Timothy Snyder calls the “Bloodlands” in his 2010 book about the region subjected to both the Nazi and Soviet regimes in alternating waves of occupation.  The project is equally empirical and conceptual in its reach.  As a matter of documentation, it focuses on the smaller and often forgotten locations where the genocide largely occurred––in towns and village ghettos, slave labor camps, transit and subcamps, forest massacre sites, deportation routes––in addition to the more notorious and centrifugal sites of memory like the death camps at Auschwitz, Sobibór, Bełżec, and Majdanek.  In this way, Alive and Destroyed works to de-centralize the image of the Holocaust, showing it to have penetrated into every town and every community in occupied Europe, without exception.  Conceptually, the project understands photography as a cultural force for conveying loss and absence as much as witness and presence, and so seeks to direct the contingency of the photographic image toward historical experience that is intrinsically volatile, destitute and unresolved.  Visually, Alive and Destroyed pivots on an unusual approach to the documentary image.  Made with a large format camera, the images are at once descriptive and inchoate, abrupt and elusive, declarative and tentative––toward a type of non-conclusive knowing appropriate to the ruptures that are constitutive of the subject.  Accompanying each photograph is a short essay concerning the site pictured, drawn from my research, and the work as a whole will be accompanied by a longer essay on the problems and imperatives of remembrance of genocide through images.
